What is blacktop anyway, and is it any different from asphalt? Both asphalt and blacktop are made with the two primary ingredients of crushed stone and bitumen (a petroleum based material commonly used in roofing shingles). The difference is the quantity of each used in the mixing. Asphalt is used more often for high traffic roadways, frequently used by heavy trucks, and contains a higher percentage of bitumen. Blacktop is more commonly used for residential driveways, bike paths and small commercial projects. It contains a higher percentage of crushed stones.
